Feng Shui – Succulents For Life

It doesn’t matter if you believe in Feng Shui or not there’s no denying that all plants have energy regardless of whether or not that energy is good or bad. When it comes to your home though I think that we can all agree nobody wants to bring negative energy or bad luck into their house, which is why I decided to write this article. To hopefully answer the question of whether succulents are good or bad luck once and for all. Are succulents good or bad luck? As a general rule succulents are considered to have positive energy and bring the owner (and their family) good luck. When it comes to the garden all succulents are thought to bring good luck but succulents with thorns are said to be bad luck inside the house. Is it good luck to have a succulent in the house? If you’re a follower of Feng Shui (the ancient Chinese art of utilizing energy to harmonize people with their environment and creating an equilibrium) then I’m sure you’re going to say that it is good luck to have succulents in the home but what about if you don’t believe in it? Regardless of your opinions on this, there is some sound scientific evidence that demonstrates just how good succulents are, but more on that in a bit. While there are obviously some plants out there that are thought to bring you bad luck, as a general rule, succulents aren’t bad luck at all and are, in fact, considered to be one of the luckiest plant species out there, regardless of whereabouts in the house you put them. Along with oodles of good luck, succulents are also great for making you healthier, helping you to sleep better, and for improving your concentration and productivity. This is one of the main reasons why (well that and the fact that they’re easy to care for) they’re regularly given to students for their dorm rooms. As well as improving your health some succulents, such as the Jade Plant, are also believed to bestow riches on their owners. This is why they’re often referred to as money plants. Don’t worry I’ve not forgotten about the scientific research that shows just how good succulents are, and I’m sure you’ll agree with me when you realize that one of the studies was carried out by NASA. Okay, I admit that their research was carried out into the air purifying capabilities of some varieties of succulents but breathing in clean, fresh, and healthy air helps to improve our brain function which in my book is most definitely good luck! [source] Other studies have been carried out into the health benefits of succulents, especially on hospital patients but I think that’s for another day. Is it bad luck to have a succulent in the house? We’ve talked a lot about the benefits of having succulents around the house but what about the negative aspects, surely these plants can’t be all perfect, can they? Well, to be honest, no they’re not and there are some types of succulents that shouldn’t be brought into the home. Or at the very least, their positioning should be considered properly. While most succulents will bring positive energy into the home it’s believed that succulents with thorns shouldn’t be placed near doorways, nor should they be placed in the bedroom, lounge, kitchen, dining room, or in the office. While that might seem like a random collection of rooms, there is actually a reason behind this. Placing thorny succulents such as cacti (for those that say they’re not true succulents they are a subgroup of succulents) in doorways is said to act as a barrier and can separate you from your loved ones. Some people believe though that placing them by the window can ward off any negative energy and protect the home. Putting thorny or spiky succulents in the kitchen on the other hand is said to cause all food to taste bad and result in a loss of appetite. The same can be said for placing them in the dining room, especially if they’re being placed on or near the table itself. Likewise bringing these succulents into the bedroom or lounge can help to create a tense, uneasy feeling in the room, not a good thing in rooms that are meant for rest, relaxation, or pleasure. While putting a lot of succulents in the study will lead to a good environment for concentration and work, placing a thorny succulent in the room will have the opposite effect. Messing with your concentration and ability to think clearly. Having thorny succulents in the office is believed to result in a loss of money, business partners, and valued customers. One thing I have to say though is that there’s no scientific evidence to suggest that succulents bring any bad luck at all but, to me at least, that doesn’t matter. I honestly think it’s not worth taking the chance, I’d rather not have them in the home and then find out they are good luck than the other way round. What do succulents symbolize? We can all attach symbols, feelings, and beliefs to items but for succulents, this goes beyond one person's projections with many succulents symbolizing the same thing around the world. Commonly linked to luck and prosperity succulents are also a symbol of eternal and enduring love. In fact, the Kalanchoe species as a whole is closely associated with romance and eternal love. Plants such as the agave are often referred to as century plants because they are seen as a symbol of security and protection. In Mexico, they are also believed to be a giver of life.
